NHS orthodontics explained

We treat both NHS and private patients at our London Road practice. NHS orthodontics is for under-18s and focuses on clinical need, meaning problems with how the teeth line up or how the bite works, rather than purely cosmetic concerns.

Whether a child qualifies is decided using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, known as IOTN. At the first appointment a Specialist Orthodontist examines your child and scores their teeth against that index, then explains the result to you in plain terms.

An early check has another advantage: it lets us watch how teeth and jaws are developing and choose the best moment to begin. If your child does not qualify, or you would rather not wait, private braces and aligners are available with the same team.

Step by step

How treatment unfolds

A Specialist Orthodontist oversees each stage, from the first scan to your retainers.

  1. 1

    Eligibility check

We examine your child's teeth and jaw growth and score them using IOTN.

  2. 2

    Plan and timing

You hear what we recommend, the options available and when to start.

  3. 3

    Braces and retention

Your child is supported through treatment, then given retainers to keep the result.

Worth knowing

If NHS treatment is not an option

Some children do not meet the NHS threshold, even when their parents would still like the teeth treated. In that case we offer private braces and clear aligners for young patients, with 0% APR finance for eligible families and payment plans tailored to you. We will go through every option at the assessment.

Your questions

Questions we are often asked

How is NHS eligibility decided?

It depends on your child's age and their IOTN score, which a Specialist Orthodontist works out at the first appointment. We will explain the outcome clearly.

Will we have to wait?

Demand for NHS orthodontics is high, so a wait is possible. We will tell you honestly what to expect, and explain private routes if you would like to begin sooner.

What happens if my child does not qualify?

Private treatment is available for children and teenagers, including fixed braces and clear aligners, and we can talk through the costs with you.
