Tooth-coloured braces

Ceramic braces

Brackets that pick up the shade of your teeth, so fixed treatment draws far less attention.

Ceramic braces explained

Think of ceramic braces as the familiar fixed brace in a quieter colour. The mechanics are identical: brackets bonded to the teeth, a wire linking them, and steady adjustments. The brackets themselves are made from a clear or tooth-shade ceramic, which is why they fade into your smile.

We often suggest them to adults and older teenagers who need the control of a fixed appliance but would prefer it to be low-key. They can also be a good answer when a case is not well suited to aligners.

Our Specialist Orthodontists fit and adjust ceramic braces at the practice, with visits roughly every six to eight weeks. You will get straightforward guidance on brushing, and on the foods and drinks worth going easy on, so the brackets stay clear.

Your questions

Questions we are often asked

Do ceramic brackets straighten teeth as well as metal ones?

They do. Tooth movement is driven by the wire, so results are comparable. The main difference is how the brackets look.

Can the brackets discolour?

Modern ceramic brackets resist staining well. We will explain which foods and drinks to limit and how to keep them clean.

How long will I wear them?

A typical course runs from about one to two years, depending on what needs correcting. Your orthodontist will estimate this for you at the assessment.
