Classic fixed braces

Fixed metal braces

The long-established brace, now slimmer and lighter, and still a strong choice for demanding cases.

Fixed metal braces explained

Small stainless steel brackets, one per tooth, joined by a thin archwire. That simple set-up has straightened teeth for generations, and today's versions are neater and more comfortable than the braces many parents remember.

The strength of a metal brace is control. Your orthodontist can move each tooth in precise directions, rotate it, and work on how the upper and lower teeth meet. That is why metal braces remain a first choice for more complex crowding and bite problems, at almost any age.

Treatment at our Sevenoaks practice is led by Specialist Orthodontists, with review visits about every six to eight weeks to adjust the wire. You will be shown how to clean around the brackets from day one.

    Records and planning

X-rays, photos and scans help us plan exactly how each tooth should move.

  2. 2

    Bond and adjust

Brackets go on in one visit, then the wire is refined at regular reviews.

  3. 3

    Off and retained

Brackets are removed and retainers hold the finished position.

Your questions

Questions we are often asked

Will braces make my mouth sore?

The first few days after fitting, and after some adjustments, can feel tender. This usually passes within a week, and we will suggest simple ways to ease it.

Is sport still possible with braces?

Yes. For contact sports, a mouthguard is sensible, and your orthodontist can advise on a suitable one.

Could my child have braces on the NHS?

Under-18s who meet the national criteria may qualify. Our NHS orthodontics page explains how eligibility is assessed.
